Video of the Olympic Torch Relay in Derby on Friday 29th June 2012. Day 42.

This was a very important day for Derby as the 2012 Olympic Torch Relay came to our city.
I have tried to capture the feel of the day, I have never seen so many people come out to support something like this before. All the streets along the route were crowded with onlookers.
Were you there? What did you think to this event?
Did you spot yourself in my video?, if so please leave a comment.

My video of the Olympic Torch Relay in Derby on Friday 29th June 2012. Day 42.

If YOU have a video of the Olympic Torch Relay in Derby then please post it as a "video response" to my video.
Feel free to link/embed my video on Facebook etc.

Derby is just one of many places the relay is passing through, to see where its been and where its going next see the "Olympic Torch Relay route" page :
http://www.london2012.com/torch-relay/route/

I only managed to capture some of the olympic torch bearers, there were so many people on the streets that I could not get through.
The last point I saw it was from the Corn Market, it was so busy there that I could not get through.
I did try and then run all the way to King Street from the Corn Market but did not manage to get there in time.

The Torch went onto Darley Park for the evening celebration where Double world Superbike champion James Toseland lit the Olympic cauldron.
The celebration, was broadcast live on BBC1, and included performances by urban pop star Loick Essien and Britain's Got Talent 2010 runners-up Twist and Pulse.

What a great event to come to Derby!

For more information on the route though Derby see my blog :

This event was on East Midlands Today which you can see a small paer of here. EMT 29th June 2012.

Severe thunder storm in Derby right now. View a real-time lightning strike map.

Thursday 28th June 2012, 1pm
In the last couple of hours in Derby, Derbyshire there has been a severe thunder storm with some serious major lightning strikes and torrential rain, the likes of which I've not seen for years.

Did you know that you can view a real-time lightning strike map of the UK so you can see where the thunderstorm is and how severe it is?

Here is a screen grab showing the last 60 minutes of lightning strikes for the UK, as you can see the storm was quite bad. Next image below this one is a current map of lightning strikes for the UK for comparison.
Real-time lightning strike map showing strikes over Derby at 11:30am on Thursday 28th June 2012.

Personally I enjoy watching a good thunderstorm and trying to predict if the storm is getting closer or further away by counting in seconds between the flash and the thunder. There are lots of books on the subject.

Next time there is a thunderstorm in the Derby area you may be able to see it comming by looking at the local webcams - Derby and Derbyshire webcams.

If you would like to see real-time lightning strike map for the UK right this second then here it is below.
If there are no coloured markers on it then thats because there are no thunderstorms!
The map below shows all of the lightning strikes that have occurred in the last 60 minutes. Also what charge they were and if they connected between clouds or to the ground.

Here is the key
+CG Positive cloud to ground strike
-CG Negative cloud to ground strike
+IC  Positive in cloud or intracloud strike
-IC   Negative in cloud or intracloud strike

Photographing lightning is very difficult and offers a great challenge

Here is some intracloud lightning in Derby, NOT the Derby in Derbyshire but the Derby in Kansas, USA !

Hope you found this of interest.

360 degree tour Darley Park for the 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebration and Darley Park Concert.

I have been working for several weeks on a complete virtual tour of Darley Park in preperation for the 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebration and Darley Park Concert which are both taking place in this park.
This will allow people around the world to look around the park in great detail using my full spherical 360° x 180° panoramas taken at various places. Mostly in May this year but I have also included some from years past that have never been seen before.

The Darley Park Virtual Tour Map.
Click the map image below to access the draggable interactive map. This has marker icons on it.
Simple click on an icon and click the link in the pop up that appears to view the 360 degree panorama from that location. Some panoramas have "jump links" within them allowing you to jump to the next panorama.

Click here to view my Darley Park Vrtual Tour map.

Or click -> Darley Park 360 degree Virtual Reality Tour.

I have just been to Darley Park (Wednesday 27th June 2012) and taken a new panorama on the slope in front of the stage which is currently being erected ready for Friday and Saturday.

This is a very large panorama and you should only attempt to view it if you have at least a 10Mb broadband connection otherwise it will take too long to load in.

Darley Park 360° Panoramic photograph in front of the Olympic stage.
In my panorama you can see the stage taking shape next to the Derwent, as you can see its going to be quite a big stage and the location withing Darley Park should allow everyone to get a good view of the events.

Once loaded in you can have a look around using the mouse or the icons at the bottom. Click the fullscreen icon to make the viewer fill your screen (just like the YouTube player).

Also I retook a panorama in front of the new Terrace Cafe area that is almost ready to reopen after months of redevelopment.

What happens at a beer festival?
If its your first time, don't worry!, pop along and see.
When you go through the entrance doors of Derby Assembly Rooms you will have to either show your CAMRA membership card or pay the entrance fee. You then go up the stairs to the cloakroom area, here you will find toilets and also the Glass Hire area. You will need to hire either a half pint or one pint glass (£2.50). If you return this glass when you leave then you get your money back or you can keep it.
Once you have your glass you make your way up the two lots of stairs. In this area you will find all sorts of stalls selling T-shits, Glasses and other beer related items as well as food of all types.
On this level you will find the entrances into the Great Hall. The Great Hall is where most of the beers and ciders are located and also where the live entertainment will happen.
If its a bit too noisy for you in the great hall then just follow the signs along to the Darwin Suite.
If you are not sure what to try then you can ask for a taste before you buy, obviously don't do that too much otherwise you won't be too popular !

If you have never been to a beer festival before then you are missing an experience, there are not just beers on sale there are ciders and Perries.  You can get some hot or cold food too. T-shirts and glasses are available to buy. And live music to watch each day.

Its best to arrive by foot, there is plenty of parking outside for your Beer Scooter :)

When you pay the entrance fee, you go up the stairs and turn left to either hire a glass or buy a glass.

We went to see Gary Numan at the O2 Academy in Sheffield a couple of weeks ago on his Machine Music Tour 2012. Even though Gary is 54, he does not seem to have aged at all from when I remember him in the early 80s.

Someone who was at the same concert has captured his great performance of Are 'Friends' Electric?
Here is their video from this gig:

This song was written way back in 1979 but still sounds great.

Were you at this concert?
What did you think to it

If you would like to see him then he is performing at several festivals in the next few months, see his website here. Gary Numan Tour Dates.

Here is a great photograph by Scott Hukins from this gig :

Useful free apps for Train Passengers on iPhone. Know the Platform, live information etc

If you are an occasional user of the railway network in the UK then I have a couple of handy free apps for the iPhone that I often use, that you may find of use.

Sheffield Railway Station.

I use these apps so I know where and when trains are arriving and where they are going to. You can of course do a lot more with these apps such as buy tickets.
These are great if you have arrived at a train station, bought your ticket and want to know quickly what time and platform your next train is due without scanning the departures boards.

The apps are :
The trainline.com
Crosscountry Train Tickets.
These free apps are available for iPhone and Android.

In my examples below we are going to look at trains between Derby and Sheffield.
thetrainline app
Once installed click thetrainline icon. Click on edit and tap "Press to change home station". Lets say we are going to Sheffield. Select Sheffield and it will return you to the main screen.
Now simply tap "Next train home" and it will show you the next 5 trains that will take you to Sheffield from Derby station. It will show you the departure time, arrival time, Duration and if you have to change.

Tainline app showing next trains to Sheffield

Train Tickets app

Once installed click Train Tickets icon. Click on Live Train Times icon, Tap Departures and select Derby and tap the "View Trains" button. This will show you the next 18 trains that are going to depart from Derby station. It even tells you if the train is on time or how many minutes late it is and also what platform its going to leave from!
If you tap one of the trains then it will show you a graphical map of the position of the train for its entire journey. So you can see where the train journey started from and where its going to end.

Tainline app showing next trains to Derby

Here we can see that the 15:54 train from Sheffield is going all the way to Penzance :

Here we see that the 15:54 train to Derby from Sheffield is 1 minute late :

The trainline app is very handy for quick checking of train journey durations as you can never assume that things stay the same. For example normally it takes around 32 minutes to get from Derby to Sheffield but checking this now (June 8th 2012) I can see its anything from 53 minutes to 1 hour 33 minutes !!!!!
I'm guessing there are some sort of engineering works causing this massive delay? You could get to London is the same time !

Hope someone finds these free apps of use.
