The Last Post Ale House, 1 Uttoxeter Old Road, opens Friday 19th September at 6pm Derby's second Micropub.

The Last Post Ale House is located at 1 Uttoxeter Old Road, Derby and opens at 6pm on Friday 19th September 2014.

Update 20th September :
Having been along to the opening night I can really recommend this ale house, I've never been in a micropub before. I was the first customer so got to photograph the very first pint being pulled.
The atmosphere is "intimate" and friendly, great bar staff and handy for town. I wish them great success with this ale house, I'm fairly sure its going to be very successful where its located due to the amount of footfall.

My opening night photos from The Last Post Ale House, Derby :
The very first ever pint pulled at the Last Post Ale House

Half an hour after opening on the first night.

Almost 2 hours after opening on first night.

The licensing hours are 11am to 11pm
The property was originally a post office so in recognition of this the pub is called the Last Post.

If your wondering where exactly that is, here is a photograph I took three days before the ale house opens. You can see The Mile pub on Friar Gate, around the corner from that on Uttoxeter Old Road you will find the Last Post Ale House.

My photograph showing the location of the Last Post Ale House, Derby, Derbyshire.

Following from the success of the Little Chester Ale House George & Walter from Wentwell Brewery are opening this second micro pub in Derby. This new micro pub is slightly smaller than The Little Chester Ale House with a capacity of about 24 persons but the cellar is a lot bigger which will enable them to have 5 hand pumps on the bar.

Here is a view inside the Ale House three days before its opening :

O2 Data speed slow in Derby City Centre at the moment due to mast on Osmaston Road.

If you are on o2 and live in Derby City Centre then you may have noticed that your Data connection to the internet has been appalling over the last few days.
This is due to engineers working on the tempoary o2 Mast that is in the car park on Osmaston Road near the old DRI.

Here is a photograph of the o2 mast that they are working on, its located in the car park of the old DRI.

Here is a map showing the o2 mast location.

Here is what your iPhone data indication looks like when you have lost 3G and its dropped down to a really poor GPRS connection :

o2 Sent me a text message on Monday "o2: Just to say, there's work planned around DE1 2QY over the next few days. it may affect your signal, but once it's done you'll have a faster smarter, stronger network, see more "http://s.o2.co.uk/Status/ByWHae"
But that link does not show any planned maintenance.
They also sent me this exact same message on 5th September with a different web address.

Here is the o2 Network Status checker : http://status.o2.co.uk/

On an iPhone it tells you your data connection method in the top/left of the screen. If you are on a wifi connection this this will hide the indicator.
The data connection method normally shows either "4G" "3G" "E" "o" or nothing.
3G vanished a few days ago and I can only get GPRS now (indicated by the o), this is extremely slow when you are used to 3G. Also at times its showing "Searching....." or "No Service".

You may find that while you are surfing you suddenly get this message "Safari cannot open the page because your iPhone is not connected to the Internet".

Hopefully this o2 mast will soon be up and working again soon as its very annoying when I'm paying for a service and getting a very poor connection like this.
Hope you found this information of use.

thanks

Paul Young in the band Los Pacaminos performing at the charity gig at the Swan Inn Pub, in Milton, Derbyshire. In this video they can be seen playing the Tequila song, they played this three times during their gig. Its a silly song that involves a lady from the audience going up on stage to hand out shots of tequila to the band members.

Trusteer Rapport causes iTunes error "unable to load data class information from Sync Services"

I have just updated my iTunes to version 11.3.1.2 and then tried to sync some new videos onto my iPhone only to get an annoying error message :

"iTunes was unable to load data class information from Sync Services. Reconnect or try again later."

I tried rebooting my computer and fully re-powering the iPhone but still get the error message.

How did I fix the problem?
I actually found that the issue was caused by Trusteer Rapport which is a browser program that most online banks encourage you to use.

I'm not sure why there is a conflict between iTunes and this software but I found that uninstalling Rapport got iTunes sync working again without any problems.

How to uninstall Rapport from Windows 7. Quit your browser, goto the control panel, Click on uninstall program, Select Trusteer Rapport and click Change, Uninstall button at the top. It will come up with a panel where you have to type in some numbers and letters to confirm that you want to stop the program running to uninstall it.

Of course uninstalling Rapport is not ideal as you may want to keep this software if you use online banking.
Hopefully there will be a fix for this soon.

hope this helps you if you get this error.

Derby Caribbean Carnival 2014 "Explosion of Cultures" on Saturday 19th July. Family fun day on Osmaston Park on Sunday 20th

This years Derby Caribbean Carnival will take place this Saturday, 19th July 2014. The weather is not looking too good at this stage with thunderstorms predicted but you never know.

The theme for this year is "Explosion of Cultures"

Here is my complete guide to this years Derby Carnival. Complete with detailed route map for the procession so you know where the best place to stand along the route to get a view of the dancers and their great costumes. I have also provided a smartphone mapping pin. The procession generally moves very slowly so if you have trouble getting here and parking then don't worry as you can soon catch up with the front of it.

On Saturday 19th the 39th Derby Caribbean Carnival Parade will take place, show your support for this annual event. Its always very popular and attracts lots of people. Derby's annual Caribbean Carnival has been running since 1975 !

The Procession starts at 1pm from Pear Tree Street in Derby. After leaving Pear Tree Street, it turns right onto Portland Street, right onto St Thomas Road, Left at the mini round-a-bout onto Pear Tree Road, right up Normanton Road to very top where it meets Lara Croft Way/Mercian Way, Down Babington Lane, left onto St Peters Street, down The Corn Market and finally onto Derby Market Place at about 3pm for the carnival showcase and live performances.

If you are a car driver and are around this area then expect to have to wait while the carnival passes through. Also the Bus route will have to change while it goes up Normanton road.

I will hopefully be taking video of this years carnival and will try an get it online within in a few days, it will appear on my YouTube channel : Andy Savage's Derby and Derbyshire videos.
If you have an account on youtube then subscribe to my channel and you will get notified when the video is available to view. Check out some of my other local videos if interested.

Derby Carnival Procession Route Map
Here is a detailed map showing the complete route that the 2014 Derby Carnival Parade will take on 19th July 2014. Click the link below the map if you want a large version you can print out.
Also the link below the map will work on an iPhone so your can see the route map when you are mobile.

If you have a smart phone (iPhone,HTC,iPad etc) then you can use a navigation drop pin I have made for you. While viewing this blog on your phone tap the link below :

Smartphone push pin <-- Tap me on your smartphone to get exact location of the start of the Derby Carnival.

Smartphone push pin <-- Tap me on your smartphone to get an exact location of the end of the Derby Carnival.

When you tap the link above, it will launch your mapping application and place a "push pin" onto the map with the exact location of the carnival parade start. You can then use this marker to get driving, walking or bus directions from your current location.
For example on an iPhone you tap the Directions button at the bottom and this will pre-fill in the start and end locations so just tap the Route button at the bottom and it will show you either the driving route or the walking route. If you tap the middle button at the top, this will even show you which bus number and when the next bus departs !

The weather forecast for the Derby Carnival does not look too good at the moment . If you are driving in from another city then you can always have a look at my local webcams to see for yourself if its raining right now.

The 4th CAMRA Greater Manchester Cider and Perry Festival, Friday 27th and Saturday 28th June 2014.

The 2014 CAMRA Greater Manchester Cider and Perry Festival takes place this weekend.
This is the 4th Cider and Perry festival. This festival takes place at the Palace Hotel in the Copper Face Jacks Bar on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th June 2014. It opens at noon until 10:30pm on both days.

Admission is £3 or £2 to CAMRA & EBCU members.

The Palace Hotel, Manchester :

Palace Hotel Manchester

The Palace Hotel is a stunning Victorian Gothic building with an impressive 217-foot-tall clock tower.
Grade II* listed red brick and terracotta building, designed for the Refuge Assurance Company.
Look at this amazing Terracotta design around the entrance:
The entrance to the Manchester Cider Festival at the Palace Hotel

It was built 1891–1895. The inside has Burmantofts faience and glazed brick as you can see here on the entrance down to the Festival bar. Amazing stuff.

The interior of this hotel was amazing, covered in stunning Terracotta and Glazed tiles like this.
Once down in the Copper Face Jacks bar you can hire your 1/2 pint festival glass.

The bar will be well stocked with Ciders and Perries and served by friendly staff. Here is a photograph (taken with iPhone) of the bar last year.
There are 57 different real ciders and perries to try from all over the UK. As is usual at festivals you can have either a 1/3 or a 1/2 pint. There is no option to have a pint for obvious reasons :)
The bar on at last years festival.
You can buy a carry out of your favorite cider.

The festival glass last year:

Last year I was chosen to be on the official CAMRA judges panel for testing Cider which was a great honor. I have never done this before. There were six of us on the panel, we had a cordoned off area in the pub. The table had 42 small glasses, 6 x 1 litre containers containing mystery ciders which were simply marked as "Sample 204" etc.
You were told how to mark a cider on its Aroma, Initial taste, Aftertaste and personal enjoyment. You had to cleanse the pallet between ciders with some water and a cracker. Once you had tasted all 6 ciders you were encouraged to go back and taste them again and change scores if you wanted to.

Video of my magic Trick - The Vanishing Penny !, How do I do it?

I start with a normal UK Pound Coin and a UK Penny coin.
I place a glass over them and the penny magically vanishes !

1) I start zoomed in on the two coins so you can see them clearly.
2) I zoom out and show the glass is normal.
3) I place the glass over the two coins and the penny vanishes.
4) After I remove the glass I zoom in close again and turn the Pound over a few times so you can see it clearly.

Please note This is NOT a camera trick or video editing trick.
The glass is a normal half pint glass.
The table top is solid wood.

Clever !

Derby Assembly Rooms car park fire, 14th March 2014 - videos

There was a massive fire at Derby Assembly Rooms car park on Friday night. At this stage its under investigation as to the cause.
When I was up there a few weeks ago I noticed that there was a large area in the middle that was surrounded by wooded sheeting, Not sure what was behind that, maybe building materials for the current work that is being done on the car park?

Here are some videos of Derby Assembly Rooms Car Park Fire :

I was on the top floor of the Assembly Rooms Car park only a few weeks ago when I took this video of the former Full Street Police Station being cleared.

Red Bull Quadcopter, 360 degree and high tech filming at Ashbourne Shrovetide Football 2014.

While I was at this years Ashbourne Shrovetide Football on Tuesday 4th March and Wednesday 5th of March I noticed some new and unusual filming going on. Perhaps you saw them too?

The first thing that was rather obvious was a quadcopter flying over the crowd, well just out of the way of the crowd.
Apparently this was being filmed for Red Bull, I took two photographs of the Quadcopter when it landed.
As you can see its being controlled by two people, one to fly the quadcopter and another operator for the camera control.
This is a nice bit of kit, must have some serious power in those 8 blades to lift that camera up, it was very stable in the air too.

I also caught the Red Bull quadcopter in flight in my video here :

)

Film Crew No 2
Another filming unit I saw consisted of four people. This consisted of a very fancy camera which was held aloft, a microphone boom operator, a camera operator and a support guy.
I took a few photographs of this crew.
The camera that was being help up in the air has all sorts of interesting stuff on it. As you can see the actual camera is hung below the framework. This is being controlled remotely by the woman. She has a screen shield to view the footage and a remote control to control the view that is being captured.

Film Crew No. 3
Another capturing method I saw a few of was a 360 degree camera on a pole. I saw a few of these during the game.
As you can see it consists of 6 small wide angle cameras made into the shape of a cube.
Not sure if they were capturing single shot 360 degree images or 360 degree video.

If anyone knows where I can find footage that was taken from these three filming crews let me know by posting a reply to this post.

2014 Ashbourne Shrovetide Football, Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th March. The maddest game of football in the World!

Note videos of the game will appear on my YouTube channel, Subscribe to see them. or follow me on Twitter so you get notified : https://twitter.com/AndySavage1969

Its that time of year again when the maddest game of football in the world takes place in Ashbourne Derbyshire. Here are the details for 2014 :

The 2014 game takes place on the 4th and 5th March.
On Tuesday Stuart Lees a retired firefighter who now runs a building business, Walker and Lees, will be turning up the ball at 2.00pm. And on Ash Wednesday, Stephen Bott, engineer will have the honour.

Ashbourne in Derbyshire is host to one of the Oldest Shrovetide football games in England and this annual event is one not to be missed.

It was first recorded in 1682, though thought to date back to the 12th Century ,various attempts were made to suppress it over the years.

It has continued unabated ever since, and by 1928 it had become so respectable that the then Prince of Wales was invited to start the game. From that year on it was known as the Royal Shrovetide Football game.

The Game is played annually on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, and consists of two teams, one from anyone born to the North of the River Henmore, and one from people born South of the river, these are known as Upards and Downards.

The Goals are on the sites of Old mills, one at Clifton and one at Sturston, these are three miles apart.
A goal is scored by a player striking the mill wheel three times with the Ball.

The ball may be kicked, carried or thrown, but generally proceeds in a series of hugs invisible to the spectator. The game can last for many hours, finishing well after dark.

The game starts at 2pm in the afternoon, when a specially prepared ball - larger than a football and filled with cork which weighs around 4lbs is thrown in by a visiting guest of honor. The balls used for the Shrovetide games are made by Ashbourne man John Harrison.
The hand sewn leather balls are filled with cork chippings.
The balls are a work of art and take a few weeks to paint.

The Rules
If the balls are goaled, then it will become the proud possession of the person who has goaled it. If no-one goals it, then the person that turned-up the ball gets to take it home.
The game starts in the Shawcroft Carpark (back of Waitrose supermarket), See my detailed map lower down. I have provided a detailed interactive Shrovetide map lower down in this post which will enable you to see all the key points of the playing field which 3 miles between the two goals at Sturston and Clifton.

Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide Football is something that you just have to see to believe your eyes.
Here is part one of four videos I made of the game in 2012 to give you an idea of what its like :

Here is part one of six videos I made of the game in 2013 to give you an idea of what its like :
